KUCHING: It took a staggering 13 hours for Sarah Freda Wilfred Peerok, a teacher, to travel from Miri to Kuching by bus, yesterday.

FREDA (left): I’m disappointed the conditions have not changed much over the last 20 years.

Arriving just before noon at the Mile 4 express bus terminal here, Freda said: “I was expecting better roads and more rest stops along the way.

“The journey took me 13 hours and I’m disappointed that the conditions have not changed much over the last 20 years.

“I’ll gladly pay toll for a faster and safer journey.”

Mohamad Basir Kipli, station supervisor for Syarikat Bas Baram, shared a similar sentiment.

He said buses traveLling along the state’s trunk road frequently failed to arrive on time.

“It’s too slow lah!” Mohamad told thesundaypost at the ticketing counter.

“The bad road means that our customers will not be happy to pay more, despite higher operation cost like expensive fuel and heavy wear and tear.”

Enduring 13 hours between Miri and Kuching is not what a fast developing state should be offering.

That’s a clear consensus among passengers and industry personnel.

Comparisons with the roads in Peninsular Malaysia are also inevitable.

For example, Freda felt that development between East and West Malaysia “should be parallel”.

“We Sarawakians need to feel that whatever is taken from the state must be worthwhile for us eventually,” she said.

Meanwhile, most express bus companies are ‘forced’ to charge a standard rate of RM80 one-way between Miri and here - for both VIP and standard buses.

VIP buses boast of having fewer seats (because they are bigger) carrying a maximum of 28 people at any one time.

Standard buses can accommodate up to 40 people.

The rates are the same because operators are trying to encourage more people to book tickets earlier.

Operators are not out of their minds; it’s just a necessity because of poor infrastructure.

The road that stretches across Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah is the most extensive on Borneo.

Just within Sarawak, the trunk road connects an estimated 5,000 villages, with varying degrees of quality.

The short stretch between Padawan (Mile-10) and Serian is without a doubt the most developed part.

It’s common knowledge that long stretches between Sibu-Bintulu and Bintulu-Miri are appalling. These are where the slowdowns occur.

It’s like a bottleneck effect: No matter how fast your car is, you’re limited by too few lanes, and pot holes along the way.

An express bus driver, who declined to be named, said Bintulu-Miri is the slowest part of any journey and that his management would advise drivers to slow down.

“It’s not just for the passengers’ safety, but to minimise repair and maintenance bills,” he pointed out.

It seems like the only group of people happy with the trunk road are Indonesians.

“We can’t really complain because the roads beyond the border to Pontianak is worse that the one this side,” said Julia Goh, who was with her parents.

She accompanies them here every three months for medical treatment.

“Its 10 hours between Kuching and Pontianak, but only 30 minutes to travel by air!” Goh quipped.

“So yes, I believe there is room for improvement; it gets quite boring to spend that much time on the road between places that are not really that far.”

To put this into perspective, 13 hours flying will get you from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to London, and 10 hours will get you to Auckland!

The difference is quite literally like day and night.

Perhaps a letter to The Borneo Post from Victor James, a Kuching resident, published in yesterday’s edition, summed it up best.

“Ask the Deputy Works Minister, who happens to be from Sarawak a SUPP Vice-President Stampin MP Datuk Yong Khoon Seng, to travel by road from Kuching to Miri…and ask this question:

Do we deserve this type of road after 45 years and countless contributions the state has made to Malaysia?” James wrote.

Perak Gerakan mulls over pullout idea from BN

Perak Gerakan wants the party to pull out of Barisan Nasional in view of coalition leaders adopting a political culture that garners support from only particular communities. About 80% of the delegates expressed that view during the Perak delegates’ conference yesterday. “We still see politicians playing race and religious issues and this is not good for the country,” said Perak Gerakan chief Datuk Chang Ko Youn, who was re-elected to the party's top post in the state after thrashing his opponent Liew Yiew Aw with a 175-vote majority. “Such ways cannot be accepted by members of Gerakan, which practises a non-racial and non-religious approach,” he said. However, he said there was a need to discuss the matter of whether the party would pull out or remain in Barisan at the coming national delegates conference in October.

In Butterworth, Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon quashed talks of the party pulling out of Barisan. Chang said that since the March 8 polls, there has emerged a new trend and many members felt the need to debate the issue of pulling out of Barisan or remaining within the coalition. “As this is the first state to hold its conference, we will have to find out the mood among delegates of other states,” said Chang, who is also Gerakan vice-president.

Perak Gerakan Wanita chief Datuk Tan Lian Hoe, who is also national Wanita chief, said initial feedback from the delegates indicated that they were dissatisfied with Barisan leaders who used racial issues to garner support from members. Dr Koh said he would discuss the matter with party leaders, noting that there seemed to be differences in opinion among its members. “To leave Barisan or not does not arise now, as we are busy campaigning for the Permatang Pauh by-election,” he said

Kuan Yew: Money Politics Root Cause of Problems

SINGAPORE (14 August, 2008): The political problems faced by many countries in Asia are due to money politics but the problem did not take root in Singapore because "we have a Division One team in charge", said former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

He said that in many Asian countries, money politics was simply the "code word" for buying votes to gain power and, after that was done, "to recover your expenses plus some profit for the next round of vote-buying".

"One of the big problems they now face, in other countries, is the people in power want to reserve the money, keep it for themselves. So, they exclude young able people who want to join their team.

"The result is, there is no talent inside the existing parties," Lee, who is Minister Mentor, was quoted by the local Today newspaper as saying at a gathering of his Tanjong Pagar constituents last night in celebration of Singapore's 43rd National Day which was last Saturday.

"In other countries, elections do not put up a Division One team. They are a Division Three, either a B team or a C team in charge. In Singapore, we carefully select our candidates," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

"Over the years, with each election, we see the quality of the MPs, their education levels, their competence, their abilities, their energy.

"Their youthfulness is renewed and we have a leadership thats able to meet the rising standards of the population," Lee said.

But today's younger generation did not understand all this, Lee said, adding that "they say, oh, lets have multi-party politics. Lets have different parties change and be in charge of the Government."

"Is it that simple? You vote in a Division Three government, not a Division One government, and the whole economy will just subside within three, four years. Finished!" he said.

Lee said such proponents should study Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines, where rotating party governments had led to more mismanagement.

"And a 'free-wheeling press' has not cleaned up corruption, although according to American 'liberal' democracy theories, it is designed to do so," he said.

Lee said that even in the face of a global recession, Singapore had enough long-term investments to buffer the setbacks.

"Why are we on top of our problem? Because there's a government that's planning ahead, seeing ahead, calculating ahead, making the right decision," Lee said. -- BERNAMA

We note that MCA cannot remain silent anymore, lest we be accused (if not already accused) of being accomplices to diabolical conspiracies.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press.

1. We meet here today because we, being members of 7 branches of MCA PJ Utara representing more than 1000 members of MCA, wish to do our civic duty to the Rakyat.

2. We note that MCA cannot remain silent anymore, lest we be accused (if not already accused) of being accomplices to diabolical conspiracies.

3. In particular, we refer to the medical report widely publicized on the internet by Malaysia Today, MalaysiaKini and countless other blogs. We had also taken the liberty to check on the comments contained in the medical report dated 28 June 2008 conducted on Mohd Saiful Bukhari Bin Azlan by Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid, the Medical Officer at Hospital Pusrawi Sdn Bhd. Three doctors we have checked with have stated that the comments meant that the results for the alleged sodomy is ‘negative’. They also confirmed that a Doctor can never change a medical report.

4. Assuming that the said medical report is true – and we call on Hospital Pusrawi to confirm or deny this – then:

4.1 We call on the Police, the Attorney-General, the MCA top leadership and the UMNO top leadership to immediately reveal in full all the evidence against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and stop withholding vital evidence and decide to charge, or not to charge, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Deputy IGP Tan Sri Ismail Omar should also refrain from making statements that the internet reports on the said medical report were aimed at confusing the people when, in the same breath, he declines to comment on the medical report. Such statements by the Deputy IGP only serve to further the perception that the police is pulling out all stops to withhold evidence crucial to the innocence of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, a fellow citizen of our country, while at the same time fabricates, or attempts to fabricate, evidence against a fellow citizen of our country.

4.2 This “bogus charge” fiasco is also causing untold damage and hurt to our economy, our integrity as a nation. Daily, we are being compared to countries like Zimbabwe and other countries where despotic rulers reign. We cannot in all conscience be a party to the machinations by executive arms of the government to withhold/fabricate evidence against a citizen of our country.

5. Therefore, we urge the Police, the Attorney-General and the government to treat all our citizens fairly, with transparency, without withholding of crucial evidence and with the proper application of the rule of law.

Bas-bas ini dikatakan asalnya milik Intrakota dan City Liner yang telah diambilalih oleh Rapid KL yang dipercayai adalah milik Khazanah. Bas-bas ini masih boleh diguna atau boleh diperbaiki dan dijual oleh Rapid KL.

Tetapi Rapid KL tidak berusaha bersungguh-sungguh untuk mendapat balik sedikit pun daripada kos pembelian syarikat-syarikat ini.

Cancellation of bridge to Singapore

I have been asked to please expose all that I know about the misuse of the Rakyat’s money.

In response to the above request I would like to identify initially four of the instances where the Government of Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has misused public money.

What I write here would not be based on speculation or suppositions or possibilities. They are the things which are public knowledge and can be verified.

I need to explain in detail. So I will deal with one subject at a time.

However, I list below the four specific instances;

1. The cancellation of the bridge to replace the Malaysian part of the Johore Causeway

2. The postponement of the double-tracking and electrification of the railway line from Johor Baru to Padang Besar

3. The sale of M.V. Agusta for one Euro

4. Wang Ehsan which has been expended on Terengganu which the new Menteri Besar claims is not Wang Ehsan but Federal Fund.

Cancellation of the Bridge to Singapore

The Singapore Government had not objected to the building of the Malaysian bridge to replace the Malaysian half of the causeway.

This bridge would be 25 metres above the water to allow for small ships to pass through after removal of the Malaysian half of the causeway. The Second Link is also 25 meters above the water surface. So the vessels can pass through the Tebrau Straits without obstruction by the causeway.

This bridge is very essential as the traffic in Johor Baru has increased and there is a permanent traffic jam caused by the North-South flow to and from the causeway and the East-West flow between the Eastern and Western parts of Johor Baru.

An elevated road is needed to be built above the East-West traffic for access to and from the causeway. Such a road would result in a part of the Johor end of the causeway becoming useless as the elevated road must land some distance from where the causeway joins the mainland. A full-length bridge to Singapore would enable a gradual rise for lorries to climb and boats to pass underneath after the causeway is removed.

Since Singapore refused to jointly construct a straight bridge to replace the causeway, a bridge with 25 meters clearance for boats to pass has got to be long enough for lorries to make a gradual climb.

The answer was to lengthen the bridge by a curved design. As for the railway line a swing bridge can be opened or closed for ships or trains to pass through.

To cut a long story short work on the curved bridge was stopped so that Dato Seri Abdullah’s Government could offer to sell 1 billion cubic metres of sand, and overflight rights for Singapore military aircraft over Johor Baru if Singapore agreed to a straight bridge.

Someone stood to make a lot of money selling 50 million cubic metres of sand per year for 20 years to Singapore for land reclamation. This was a very attractive offer as the reclaimed land can sell for 3,000-5,000 Singapore dollars (about RM6,000-RM10,000) per square metre. The Singapore Government stood to make an enormous amount of money selling this land. They therefore agreed to the straight bridge.

That dredging sand from the seabed would cause erosion of the coast, destruction of fish breeding grounds and deprive Johore fishermen of their livelihood were not of concern to the Government of Dato Seri Abdullah.

Fortunately the Johor people misbehaved. They objected to selling sand and overflights.

Abdullah frustrated that his scheme was blocked then punished the Johore people by cancelling the bridge project altogether. No straight bridge, no curve bridge either.

The result is that more than RM1 billion have been wasted building the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facilities, foundation and work on a new railway station, pilings and preliminary works on the road linking the CIQ to the bridge and compensations to the contractors because of the cancellation of the projects.

The CIQ building is now a white elephant, unused and yet have to be maintained costing hundreds of thousands of Ringgit a month.

Clearly Dato Seri Abdullah has wasted public money. All because he was angry with the Johor people for not enabling one billion cubic metres of sand to be sold to Singapore and the profits thereof.

Pembatalan Jambatan Bengkok

Saya diminta membongkar apa yang saya tahu berkenaan salah guna wang rakyat.

Untuk permulaan saya senaraikan empat tindakan dimana Kerajaan Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi telah salahgunakan wang rakyat.

Apa yang saya tulis di sini tidak berasas kepada spekulasi, kemungkinan atau kebarangkalian. Perkara ini diketahui umum dan boleh disahkan

Saya perlu beri penjelasan terperinci. Jadi saya akan bincangkan satu persatu.

Bagaimanapun saya senaraikan empat perkara spesifik;

1. Pembatalan pembinaan jambatan menggantikan tambak Johor di sebelah Malaysia

2. Penangguhan landasan berkembar dan rel elektrik daripada Johor Baru ke Padang Besar

3. Penjualan M.V. Agusta untuk satu Euro

4. Wang Ehsan yang dibelanjakan untuk Terengganu yang mana Menteri Besar yang baru mendakwa adalah bukan Wang Ehsan tetapi daripada dana Kerajaan Persekutuan.

Pembatalan pembinaan jambatan ke Singapura

Kerajaan Singapura tidak membantah pembinaan jambatan untuk menggantikan tambak di sebelah Malaysia.

Jambatan ini akan dibina 25 meter daripada paras permukaan air untuk benar kapal-kapal kecil lalu setelah separuh tambak di sebelah Malaysia di pecah. Link Kedua juga berada di paras 25 meters daripada paras permukaan air. Jadi kapal-kapal boleh melalui Selat Tebrau tanpa terhalang oleh tambak.

Jambatan ini penting kerana jumlah trafik di Johor Baru telah meningkat dan kesesakan lalulintas merupakan perkara harian disebabkan laluan Utara-Selatan yang datang dan pergi melalui tambak dan trafik Timur-Barat di antara bahagian-bahagian Timur dan Barat Johor Baru.

Jalan bertingkat perlu dibina menyeberangi trafik Timur-Barat untuk laluan dari dan ke tambak. Jalan ini akan menyebabkan penghujung tambak di sebelah Johor tidak boleh digunakan kerana jalan bertingkat hanya boleh mendarat pada satu jarak tertentu jauh daripada tempat tambak bertemu dengan tanah besar. Jika jambatan penuh ke Singapura dibangunkan cerun boleh dilandaikan untuk memudahkan lori mendaki dan bot-bot kecil melalui di bawahnya setelah tambak dipecahkan.

Kerana Singapura tidak mahu sama-sama membina jambatan penuh untuk gantikan tambak, jambatan setinggi 25 meter untuk benarkan bot-bot lalu dibawahnya mesti mempunyai kepanjangan yang mencukupi untuk benarkan lori mendaki secara beransur. Penyelesaiannya ialah untuk memanjangkan jambatan dengan rekabentuk melengkung (kemudiannya dipanggil jambatan bengkok). Bagi landasan keretapi pula, jambatan ayun yang boleh dibuka dan tutup untuk benarkan kapal atau keretapi lalu.

Untuk memendekkan cerita, kerja pembinaan jambatan bengkok dihentikan untuk membolehkan Kerajaan Dato Seri Abdullah menjual 1 billion meter padu pasir dan hak laluan terbang pesawat tentera Singapura melintasi Johor Baru jika Singaura bersetuju membina jambatan lurus.

Ada orang yang akan mengaut untung banyak menjual 50 juta meter padu pasir setahun selama 20 tahun untuk Singapura menambak tanah. Ini satu tawaran menarik kerana tanah yang ditambak boleh dijual antara 3,000-5,000 Dolar Singapura (kira-kira RM6,000-RM10,000) sekaki persegi. Kerajaan Singapura boleh buat banyak duit menjual tanah ini. Lalu merekapun menyetujui cadangan jambatan lurus ini.

Bahawa mengorek pasir dari dasar laut boleh sebabkan hakisan pantai, kemusnahan tempat pembiakan ikan dan kehilangan mata pencarian bagi nelayan negeri Johor tidak pun diambil prihatin oleh Kerajaan Dato Seri Abdullah.

Mujurlah rakyat Johor membantah penjualan pasir dan hak laluan pesawat terbang.

Abdullah yang kecewa kerana perancangannya terhalang menghukum rakyat Johor dengan membatal sama sekali projek jambatan. Tidak ada jambatan lurus mahupun bengkok.

Hasilnya lebih daripada RM1 billion telah dibazirkan yang dibelanjakan untuk membina kemudahan kompleks Kastam, Imigresen dan Kuarantin, kerja-kerja membina stesen keretapi baru dan kerja-kerja awal untuk bina jalan menghubung kompleks KIK dan jambatan serta bayaran pampasan kepada kontraktor disebabkan pembatalan projek-projek berkenaan.

Kompleks KIK kini menjadi gajah putih, terbiar tetapi terpaksa di selenggarakan dengan memakan belanja beratus ribu Ringgit sebulan.

Jelas sekali Dato Seri Abdullah telah bazirkan duit rakyat hanya kerana beliau marah dengan rakyat Johor yang halang penjualan satu bilion meter padu pasir kepada Singapura dan keuntungan yang bakal diraih oleh pihak tertentu.

Fuel-dependent villagers need help, says SNAP

KUCHING: The Government should help villagers in the remote areas who are dependent on generators for electricity supply.

Sarawak National Party (SNAP) secretary-general Edmund Stanley Jugol said the sharp increase in diesel and petrol prices would make life very difficult for these villagers.

“They need fuel to sustain their generator sets as the Government has not provided electricity through the state grid,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

Jugol said there were many rural people who were dependent on fuel for river transportation as their settlements could not be accessed by road links.

“The people of Sarawak do not deserve to pay a very high fuel price as it is producing oil for the nation.

Jugol urged the Government to increase the oil royalty to Sarawak so that the state could use the extra funding to reduce fuel prices. - The Star Online

NEP AND MALAYSIAN ECONOMIC AGENDA

KeADILan’s Malaysian Economic Agenda is committed to the upliftment and betterment of the poor and marginalized Malays, Chinese and Indians, Ibans and Kadazans. We have always stated that under our leadership the interests of the Malays will be protected and we remain committed to building a new system that is more just, more equitable and that ensures no one is left behind irrespective of race or religion.

We plan to implement new mechanisms to channel economic aid to the vast numbers of petty traders and small businessmen in Malay communities and ensure that educational opportunities, microcredit financing schemes, social and welfare services and other forms of economic relief are made available to the Malays.

I believe all Malaysians including the Malays are pleased with the mandate that was given to KeADILan on March 8th and they look forward to a government that is more accountable, fights corruption and delivers on its promises to promote economic growth and reduce poverty in all segments of society.

I am therefore deeply concerned with the attempt being made by certain elements to stoke the flames of racial hatred in the aftermath of the March 8th Malaysian elections. We have reason to believe that this vicious campaign is being orchestrated by a small number of very wealthy Malays and UMNO leaders who are themselves guilty of squandering and abusing the NEP to enrich themselves and their cronies at the expense of the general public. These people are now using the UMNO and government controlled media to incite fears among the Malays and deflect attention away from their electoral defeat and from UMNO’s historic failures to address the needs of all Malaysians including the poor and marginalised Malays.

I ask my fellow Malaysians to reject the desperate attempts by some UMNO members to salvage the remnants of a broken party by pandering to people’s fears and sowing divisions and disunity among the people of our nation.

We must remain united in support of a New Dawn for Malaysia.

At Bagan which is located on the mainland, around 3,000 people thronged a car park to attend ceramah which was also joined by both Anwar and Guan Eng.

In the midst of a downpour, the small covered makeshift stage almost collapsed when Anwar got on it, as a number of people were already taking shelter there from the heavy rain.

To applause from the crowd, Anwar said he was there as he supports Lim to be the next Bagan Member of Parliament. His ceramah topics covered the rising petrol price to corruption by the powers-that-be.
